Mobile internet services will overtake SMS messaging this year as the largest money maker for operators in the Asia Pacific region.
This is according to new research carried out by IDC, which found that multimedia features such as games, music clips and other applications will generate $16.34 billion (£9.84 billion) in 2009, accounting for 11 per cent of total revenues.
In comparison, text messaging will contribute around ten per cent, or $14.65 billion, news agency AFP reported.
Alex Chau, senior research manager at IDC, explained that higher multimedia revenue can be attributed to the growing number of handsets which are designed around accessing the mobile internet.
"This has spurred content and application developers to develop tens of thousands of applications to satisfy this new demand amongst mobile users," he added.
The study comes after analysts at Informa Telecoms and Media predicted that annual mobile service revenues in the Asia Pacific region will rise by more than 16 per cent from 2009-16.
