Mobile internet banking 'driven by youngsters'

Improvements in banking via mobile websites will be driven by demand from the youth market, an expert has said.

Steve Reynolds, chairman of the Mobile Data Association, stated that the "younger generation" would help to advance mobile internet banking because they are more familiar with using their phone to make purchases.

He said: "If you look at the younger generation who have been brought up with the internet they will say 'If I can buy apps with my phone, why can't I buy a coffee or a gig ticket?'"

Convenience is the major factor behind consumer demand for mobile banking, Mr Reynolds explained.

People are also generally more open to using their handset for more than just calling, messaging and browsing mobile websites thanks to Apple and its App Store, he added.

Mr Reynolds' comments come after Juniper Research predicted that the international mobile money transfer market will be worth more than $65 billion (£39.2 billion) by 2014.
