O2 announces £500m mobile internet investment

O2's mobile internet services will be improved thanks to a £500 million investment to build new network sites across the UK.

The operator announced that the plans will involve the creation of 1,500 new sites around the country, 200 of which will be in London. It said that the move had been driven by consumer demand for browsing mobile websites.

Derek McManus, chief technology officer for O2 in the UK, explained that due to this growing data usage, improving its mobile internet service was essential.

He explained that watching a YouTube video on a smartphone puts the same strain on the network as sending 500,000 text messages simultaneously.

"We are now aggressively accelerating our network growth programme to ensure we have significant headroom for the future," Mr McManus added.

According to O2, its 3G mobile internet network currently covers 84 per cent of the UK population. Earlier this year, industry regulator Ofcom released full coverage maps for all of the UK networks.
