Gartner: PC vendors plan to sell smartphones

The popularity of mobile web-enabled smartphones could prompt PC vendors to move into this sector, according to new forecasts.
Analysts at Gartner stated that a slump in PC sales has coincided with a rise in global smartphone sales.
As a result, the group believes PC vendors could consider it a lucrative market to move into, a step that could potentially offset the drop in PC purchases.
However, Gartner said factors such as their limited understanding of consumer behaviour in the mobile sector could limit the size of their market share for the foreseeable future.
Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, commented: "Understanding of mobile consumer behaviours, competitiveness and positioning of their mobile products and relationships with carriers, are all barriers that cannot be overcome in the short term."
He added that even established handset vendors are being challenged to maintain or expand their positions because of the growing competitiveness of the smartphone market.
According to figures from Canalys, Nokia still holds a larger share of the global smartphone market than its rivals.
